Set within a sweeping ocean and marsh-front property, this guest cottage was designed to serve multiple roles; from a cozy retreat for visiting guests to a comfortable landing spot for the homeowners while their main residence is being rebuilt. Located where a previous garage had stood, this cottage adheres to ADU (Accessory Dwelling Unit) size regulations while packing in an efficient layout and rich architectural detailing.
The clients, avid tennis enthusiasts, envisioned a shingle-style cottage that would support their active lifestyle and reflect their love of the coast. Positioned near the tennis court, the guest home blends practical features with impactful design characteristics. This includes a 16-foot Panoramic bifold door that promotes seamless indoor/outdoor living, as well as a second-level deck with curved detailing that helps to soften the home’s massing and echo the entry’s eyebrow detail.
A red cedar shake roof pairs with white cedar shingles, finished in a soft weathering stain to settle naturally into the coastal environment. Nautical touches add layers of personality throughout- from a round captain’s window to a porthole in the first-floor bathroom door.
Inside, a calming palette of soft blues and whites reinforces the breezy, maritime feel, while clever spatial planning makes the most of every inch. Though technically a one-bedroom space, a sleeper sofa provides added flexibility for the cottage’s guests.
Compact but character-rich, this coastal guest home is a casual, charming addition that both complements the surrounding landscape and supports the evolving needs of our clients.
