Rarely does a site have such a major impact on the design; however, the view to the lake from this site was heroic in scale and accentuated by placing the house on a promontory overlooking the lake below. To capture the view, the house is designed to have all the active internal spaces of the home located on the lakeside with large windows and glass doors which provide direct access to a large outdoor stone patio running the entire length of the home. During the summer months, the ease of access from the house to the exterior patios blurs the line between the indoors and outdoors and provides the homeowners with a relaxed, natural lifestyle.

The house meanders across the site in conformance with the natural setting. The building site was carefully carved out of heavily wooded acreage and much of the natural landscaping has been preserved with the house set among the trees, granite ledge and stone outcroppings.

The material palette of the home is drawn from naturally indigenous materials such as cedar siding, stone and reclaimed wood beams and ceilings. The design was intended to reflect a casual, comfortable lifestyle associated with historic lake front homes found in many of New Hampshire’s lakeside communities.

TMS designed the interior detailing of the home as well and assisted with filling in furniture, rugs and accessories. The homeowners had several heirloom-quality beds to which TMS added complementary accent furniture. TMS also helped design several window seat cushions along with fabrics and pillows.
